Booker T. Washington Essays (587 words) - Booker T. Washington
Booker T. Washington BOOKER T. WASHINGTON Booker Taliaferro Washington was the foremost black educator of the later 19th and early 20th centuries. He also had a major influence on the southern race relations and was the dominant figure in black public affairs from 1895 until his death in 1915. Born a slave on a small farm in the Virginia back country, he moved with his family after emancipation to work in the salt furnaces and coal mines of West Virginia. After a secondary education at Hampton Institute, he taught an upgraded school and experimented briefly with the study of law and the ministry, but a teaching position at Hampton decided his future career. In 1881 he founded Tuskegee Normal and Industrial on the Hampton model in the Black Belt of Alabama. Though Washington offered little that was innovative in industrial education, which both northern philanthropic foundations and southern leaders were already promoting, he became its chief black exemplar and spokesman. In his advocacy of Tuskegee Institute and its educational method, Washington revealed the political proficiency and accommodational philosophy that were to characterize his career in the wider arena of race leadership. He convinced southern white employers and governors that Tuskegee offered an education that would keep blacks down on the farm and in the trades. To prospective northern donors and particularly the new self- made millionaires such as Rockefeller and Carnegie he promised the instillment of the Protestant work ethic. To blacks living within the limited distances of the post- Reconstruction South, Washington held out industrial education as the means of escape form the web of sharecropping and debt and the achievement of attainable, self-employment, landown ership, and small businesses. Washington acquired local white approval and secured a small state accumulation, but it was northern donations that made Tuskegee Institute by, 1900, the best-supported black educational institution in the country. The Atlanta Compromise Address, delivered before the Cotton States Exposition in 1895, enlarged Washington's influence into the arena of race relations and black leadership. Washington offered black consent in disfranchisement and social segregation if whites would encourage black progress in economic and educational opportunity. Hailed as a sage by whites of both sections, Washington further consolidated his influence by his widely read autobiography Up From Slavery (1901), the founding of the National Negro Business League in 1900, his celebrated dinner at the White House in 1901, and control of patronage politics as chief black advisor to Presidents Theodor Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Washington kept his white following by conservative policies and moderate remarks, but he faced growing black and white liberal opposition in the Niagra Movement (1905-9) and the NAACP (1909-), groups demanding civil rights and encouraging protest in response to white aggressions such as lynching, disfranchisement, and segregation laws. Washington successfully repelled these critics, often by underhanded means. At the same time, however, he tried to translate his own personal success into black advancement through secret sponsorship of civil rights suits, serving on the boards of Fisk and Howard, universities, and directing philanthropic aid to these and other black colleges. His speaking tours and private persuasion tried to equalize public educational opportunities and to reduce racial violence. These efforts were generally unsuccessful, and the year of Washington's death marked the beginning of the Great Migration from the rural South to the urban North. Washington's racial philos ophy, pragmatically adjusted to the limiting conditions of his own era, but did not survive the change. Booker T. Washington was a man the greatly influenced that American society. Biographies

David Copperfield Essays
David Copperfield Essays David Copperfield Paper David Copperfield Paper On the 28th of November 2008 I attended a performance of David Copperfield written by Charles Dickens at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester. The play was adapted and directed by Giles Havergal, who for 33 years was artistic director of the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. David Copperfield follows the life of a boy, who was orphaned at an early age and experiences considerable hardship. Throughout the story David experiences love and betrayal but I believe the main theme in the story is ambition.Firstly I would like to comment on how well the actors identified their characters especially the actor who played David himself, although David is played by a fully grown man it is made obvious at the beginning that opposed to playing a fully grown man he is playing a child. This is displayed clearly very early on in the play when we saw David wailing like a child at the front of the stage, to emphasise the fact he was a child his facial expressions and movement where also very childish a good ex ample of this is when he is talking to his Nanny Peggety he tugs on her skirt and looks up to her.The other actors on stage also treat him like a child and talk to him in a different tone than they would to someone closer to their own age. Another well played role was that of Uriah Heap. From the moment he took his place on stage (even before he started to speak) you could begin to recognise that he was villainous, one of the traits I found particularly effective was how he had his hands up by his chest for a considerable amount of time. He also appeared nervous. Charles Dickens himself describes the character of Uriah Heap as probably the most consummate villain that has ever existedThe stage layout was very well suited to the play. It had some slightly raised areas, another raised area at the rear and a gauze. The two small raised were often used to show the significance of the character for example when David was attending school the school master was nearly always standing on a higher level that the pupils. The set was not very realistic but I think this was how it was intended to be. I think it was more symbolic and reflected the themes of the play for example around the edges of the stage books were piled. This could be signifying how during his younger years he had a tendency to immerse himself in a book in order to hide himself from the plight of every day life. The lighting and sound was also very well thought out for instance when David visited the seaside there was faint echoes of seagulls in the background accompanied by the sound of the sea. The lighting helped make it obvious who you should be focusing on for example if the narrator was delivering a monologue a spot light would be on him and there would be limited (if any) movement around him and in the background.Compared all the other plays I have seen the narrator played a totally different role in this one. On Wikipedia it states that a narrators role is;Within any story (literary work, movie, play, verbal account, etc.), the entity that tells the story to the audience.Although the narrator in David Copperfield does all of this he is also acts as the protagonist in the play as he is narrating his own life which is interesting as he reacts to his own actions, and to some degree I think you can sense his regret. I also found it particularly interesting how as David gets to the age of the narrator they swap roles and the narrator steps in and becomes one of the actors involved.I believe amongst many messages hidden in the play one of the most important was regret, I feel that whilst looking back you could sense how he regrets some of the paths he had taken in life but accepts them. The actor playing the older David communicates this well by sometimes stepping in and trying to change things himself. I believe this method displays the point well.I believe the director wanted to change peoples views on the play and make you see it in another light. I believe he achieved this w ell. I also think he adapted the humour to modern day humour, which was very cleverly done as it was subtle but effective. The audience reacted very well to this and laughed in all the right places, you could tell that they stayed interested all the way through and the general atmosphere of the theatre was amazing.Overall I think it was a very original piece of drama. Even compared to some shows I have seen in the West End such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or Grease it stood out. Probably the most appealing element for me was the idea of having both the protagonist and the narrator as one person. My favourite scene was the opening one as it drew you in to the play and made you want to find out more about David. It also set the scene well and gave you a taster of whats to come. I would definatly recommend it to other people to see as the acting was superb, the script was well written and the set was memorable.

Internship at children national centerye Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Internship at children national centerye - Essay Example Both homozygous and heterozygous patients can pass their genes onto their children. Sickle cell carriers typically undergo some type of genetic counseling prior to childbearing (Armandola, 2002). Hg SC multiple admitted to the hospital, salmonella sepsis and L humerusosteomyelitis, priapism x1 is pain that can last hour to some days (Kahan et.al. 2009)., post tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, use BiPap at night and chronic lungs disease related to sickle cell anemia. After observing the patient, he showed symptoms of priapism, chronic pain and heavyfluid consumption; both on the IV and through normal drinking. He also had heavy urine output. I also focused on how the pain was managed along with the treatment procedure. With further information obtained from the patientââ¬â¢s chart and past medical history in it, I learnt what type of Sickle Cell he has and the medication that heââ¬â¢s on. The key information on patient reports included his diagnosis, the order of medication and the frequency of how the medication was administered. It also indicated any allergies that the patient may have. This information can be obtained electronically on the Kardex that the hospital uses. My preceptor pointed out the importance of safe dosage of medication per the patient. This is known as medication calculation and it is very important to all patients but it is more critical for children and elderly patients. He also pointed out the importances of knowing when to use SBAR. This is because it increases patient safety by avoiding communication breakdowns between caregiver and the patient (Joint commission resources, 2007) What I have learnt in the school enabled me to make proper assessment of my patient. I learnt the importance of communication, understanding the prescribed medication and how to administer medication by using theââ¬Ë6 rights Ruleââ¬â¢ in administering the medicine. The 6 rights rules means, right patient, right route, right medication, right dose, right time and

Incident Response, Business continuity, and Disaster Recovery Plans Research Proposal
Incident Response, Business continuity, and Disaster Recovery Plans - Research Proposal Example It thus becomes imperatively necessary to provide evidence and research based guidelines for effective implementation of incident response and disaster recovery plans for organizations which have employed the use of information and communication technology in their operations. It is due to the increasing incidents of attacks to information systems and the related security challenges that it is necessary for organizations to achieve maximum precautionary plans for response and recovery from incidences without having any significant impact on the business processes. The lack of effective implementation of incident response and recovery plans has been caused by lack of specific approach and strategies for establishment and application of these plans within the organization. This paper presents a case study proposal with a view of enabling organizations to implement effective response and recovery plans for business continuity. Nonetheless, it is necessary to note that there are cost and time implications which are associated with the implementation of the incident response and recovery plans for the advantage of business continuity. ... In the light of this argument therefore, it is suitable that business organizations are guided in the proper planning of the response approaches and recovery process in cases of attacks to their information systems. The benefit of proper and organized response and recovery plan for various attacks to organizational computer systems is the reduction of the costs and time related to failure of continuity of business processes (Haddow, Bullock and Coppola, 2011). All organizations require an information system policy which provides the step by step procedure for response to attacks of the system and the recovery from possible attacks (Kuonqui, 2006). Without such a policy, businesses are likely to fail in attaining recovery from various attacks of their information systems (Jennex, 2012).Organizations often have incident response teams which help them to effectively manage various attacks to their information systems (Omar, Alijani and Mason, 2011). These teams are accredited with the r ole of following standard procedure for response and recovery from incidences. In this regard, the teams a significant function of protecting the organization from loss of the continuity of business processes (Kuonqui, 2006). It is notable that regardless of the postulation of information system policies as the solution to the response and recovery from incidences, there is no clear presentation of the contents of such polities. Moreover, the incident response team composition has not been defined clearly. This can be attributed to unprofessional response to attacks of organizationsââ¬â¢ information systems (West, 1996). Additionally, actual steps which should be taken in the procedural response to an incidence and recovery from such incidences have not been provided in a distinct

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Entrepreneurship and Innovation - Assignment Example This essay discusses that entrepreneurial strategies are bound by very idiosyncratic environment, imposingenvironment imposing certain basic limitations on their strategy designs. The strategies of entrepreneurial marketing are the same as those in the conventional marketing. The entrepreneurial organizations are resource constrained organizations because they do not approach the mass media to launch their products or campaigns. They have limited financial, human and technical resources. But they do have creativity and time which they use as resources to accomplish their management and marketing goals. The meaning and significance of the barriers to growth of entrepreneurial business are highlighted by the fact that entrepreneurial business is mostly surrounded by lack of monetary and, financial and technical and man power resources in the initial and early stages of its development. Despite these facts entrepreneurs are surrounded by barriers that limit their growth and financial st ability. From the foregoing discussion and analysis, the researcher can conclude that entrepreneurial firms are surrounded by certain growth barriers peculiar to their stage of business development. These barriers are mostly related to manpower, material, technical and eventually financial in nature. These barriers hinder and impede the growth and expansion of entrepreneurial business and if an entrepreneur sets in motion a process of 4 Is as described, he can overcome the practical side of these barriers in most cases.

Global Application Or Local Application Information Technology Essay
Global Application Or Local Application Information Technology Essay Management information system is make to handle the information create by the organization of a specific of business. There system key in the information and allow the business for work, handle and accumulate the information via the software application. Information and inquiry get from the information system and can support in the pointing, organization and decision making of administrators. MIS is a classification that offers data need to handle organizations efficiently. The first question is discussed about selecting the computer hardware and software for the organization. It means as the hardware and software of tools to manage the organization in the selecting of hardware and software. And what kind of management, organization and technology are issues faced when select the computer hardware and software. The issues that are face is management issues, staff issues, organization issues and so on. Furthermore in question two is discussing about if i were a manager in a company that operates in many countries, the criteria would i use to determine whether a new system should be developed as a global application .A global business plan determines how a business will develop and manage its operations around the world. Regularly its used by accessible companies as a plan for increasing rather than by new businesses Why is selecting computer hardware and software for the organization an important for management decision? What management, organization and technology issues should be considered when selecting computer hardware? Our choice of hardware and software will have a huge influence on the efficiency of our employees and our organizations bottom line. We need the right tools to get the job completed. Computers consist of two main elements, namely hardware and software. Hardware is basically the physical parts of the infrastructure used in running the program. They include parts like workstations and servers, tablet PC, laptops, monitors, scanners, printers, networking components like Routers and Bridges, etc. Software is the interface that we use to perform certain actions on our computer. We may ask few questions such as below to give us some idea on how to choose the hardware and software: Can this hardware and software do the job that we need it to do? How the hardware and software will suits in with other products that our organization uses? Are this hardware and software going to leave us in a proprietary niche or without support? What ups and downs can we forecast for our organization? Do we need to plan for different needs or working practices? Whats our budget? Can we pay for the hardware / software, the license, the training, and the upgrades? It is important to consider whether the hardware and software is from recognized and well established source. Software and hardware are often expensive and should come with good after-sales service and a good guarantee. For Example, wholesale computers come with bundled software packages that are not compatible with your network software, and by the time we purchase the required software we have over paid and have voided the 1 year manufacturers warranty. So we have to make sure to ask about these before choosing the products that we are going to use. Another important concern to take into account when choosing hardware and software is whether it will do the job that we require it to do and who will be using this hardware and software. Theres no point in buying hardware or software that does nothing. Each computer should complement the user and the software that is being used. For example, a business server is a different type of computer than a PC. It is used by every person, computer, printer, and any peripheral within your business. A PC does not have the components to withstand the workload of a server, and will ultimately fail resulting in company downtime that affects your bottom line. We also have to check the system requirements of hardware or software to ensure they work well. For example, some peripherals only work in Windows or Mac OS. Other might require certain software to fully function. It is essential to buy legal hardware and software and to register the products that we purchase. By registering our software, we are often able to receive additional upgrades, service and support at no additional fees. Add-ons, plug-ins, useful tools and information from the software company can benefit our organizations use of purchased software. For example, if we are using Windows then we will need to register our Windows software in order to be able to download important service packs and updates. Pirated software is hacked to take out the copy protection. This affects the performance of the software. This affects the performance of the software and can cause freezing/crashing on our PC and conflicts with other legitimate software programs. Pirated software results in our paid employees being unable to do their job, which affects their performance and our business bottom line. Security management is a vital aspect of risk control. We have to consider about the validation routines, access control and authorization. Usually basic hardware and software includes a security package including fire walls, anti-virus, anti-spam and anti-spyware for the network and computer systems themselves. The most prohibitive factor in selecting hardware or software is the cost. We have to make sure our organization can afford the hardware or software. If the product is very expensive, then we should consider alternatives that provide similar functionalities. Computer software contains of sets of instructions written in computer language to address particular tasks. In all sectors, software is used to address specific needs. For example, a Banking application handles banking operations and functions, while Human Resources software treats payroll, personnel and other employee issues. Furthermore in selecting computer hardware and software for the organization is have business strategy, organizational strategy and IS strategy. As known for the business strategy drives both organizational and information strategy and all decisions are driven by the firms business objectives. Business Strategy drives all other strategies. An organizational and Information Strategy are dependent upon the Business Strategy. IS strategy is affected by the other strategies as a firm uses and IS strategy always involves consequences. In addition for the organizational strategy includes the organizations design as well as the choices it makes in its work processes. How will the company organize in order to achieve its goals and implement its business strategy. Business Diamond is a simple framework for identifying crucial components of an organizations plan and Managerial Levers another framework for organizational design, states that successful execution of the firms organizational strategy is the best combination of organizational, control, and cultural variables. For next is IS strategy and it plan an organization uses in providing information services. IS allows business to implement its business strategy. IS also helps to determine the companys capabilities. Four key of IS infrastructure components are key to IS strategy. These key components are sufficient to allow the general manager to assess critical IS issues. What Who Where Hardware List of physical components of the system Individuals who use it Individuals who manage it Physical location Software List of programs, applications and utilities Individuals who use it Individuals who manage it What hardware it resides upon and where that hardware is located Networking Diagram of how hardware and software components are connected Individuals who us it/individuals who manage it/company service obtained from Where the nodes are located ,where the wires and other transport media are located Data Bits of information stored in the system Individuals who use it Individuals who manage it Where the information resides Information systems strategy matrix What management, organization and technology issues should be considered when selecting computer hardware Price the great equalizer, most important because it establishes the basic ground rule Performance what do you need the hardware to perform, this is where decisions are refined to meet specific needs within a specific budget. Reliability- IMHO most modern equipment is very reliable in hardware terms (software installations can be troublesome, but thats a different issue). Hardware and software costs a lot of money. IT is now critical to an organizations success so its important that the software meets the needs of the organization. Hardware needs to be sufficiently powerful to meet the demands that will be placed on it by the users. Management issues help our identify, communicate, monitor and resolve project issues. The project issue management process will help us to put in place the steps needed to quantify and report all issues within the project. Although it discuss about organization issues is about management, its not so much concerned with how to train and grade the staff as with how to build a usable system. However, it need to understand the auditors and checkout staff, or you wont be able to do even a halfway passable job. Many systems fail because their designers make unrealistic assumptions about the ability, motivation, and discipline of the people who will operate it. This isnt just a matter of one-off analysis. For example, an initially low rate of fraud can cause people to get complacent and careless, until suddenly things explode. Also, an externally induced change in the organization such as a merger or acquisition can undermine control. If you were a manager in a company that operates in many countries, what criteria would you use to determine whether a new system should be developed as a global application or local application? If I were a manager in a company that operates in many countries, the criteria would I use to determine a new system is global application. A global business plan determines how a business will develop and manage its operations around the world. Regularly its used by accessible companies as a plan for increasing rather than by new businesses. This business plan prepares a business to change its operations internally. Its also used externally for solved an investment capital that will be used for development. The criteria will I use to determine the new system is global application known as Feasibility studies purpose to goal and rationally uncover the strengths and weaknesses of the existing business or proposed venture, opportunities and threats as presented by the environment, the resources required to carry through, and ultimately the prospects for success. In its simple term, the two criteria to consider feasibility is cost require and value to be attained. Such as a well-designed feasibility study have to provide a historical background of the business or project depiction of the product or service, accounting statements, details of the operations and management, marketing research and policies, financial data, legal requirements and tax dependent. Furthermore feasibility studies preliminary technical development and project consummation. Four common criteria: Technology and system feasibility The review is based on an outline design of system requirements in terms of Input, Processes, Output, Fields, Programs, and Procedures. It can be quantifier in terms of volumes of data, trends, frequency of updating, in order to interpret whether the new system will perform sufficiently or not. Technological feasibility is carried away to specify whether the company has the capability, of term in software, hardware, personnel and proficiency, to handle the completion of the project when writing a feasibility report, the following should be taken to consideration: â⬠¢ A brief description of the business â⬠¢ The part of the business being looked towards â⬠¢ The human and economic factors â⬠¢ The possible solutions to the problem Economic feasibility An economic criticism is the most oftentimes used method for evaluate the effective of a new system. More general known as cost/benefit analysis, the instruction is to define the benefits and savings that are expect from a candidate system and compare them with costs. If advantages outweigh costs, then the conclusion is made to design and implement the system. An entrepreneur must precise weigh the cost versus benefits before taking an action. Cost-based study: It is significant to identified cost and benefit factors, which can be categorize in a Development costs, and Operating costs. It is a criticism of the costs to be occasion in the system and the utility can be derivable out of the system. Time-based study: This is a significant of the time require achieving a return on investments. In a day value of a project also will become a factor. Operational feasibility Operational feasibility is a proceeding of how well a suggest system solves the problems, and takes benefits of the opportunities identified during scope definition and how it satisfies the requirements identified in the requirements analysis phase of system development. Scedule feasibility The project will abort if it takes too long to be completed before it is useful. Exclusively this means commentary how long the system will take to development, and if it can be completed in a given time phase using some system like payback term. Schedule feasibility is a action of how reasonable the project timetable is. Other feasibility factors Resource feasibility Resource feasibility involving questions such as how much time is available to build the new system, when it can be built, whether it interferes with normal business operations, type and amount of resources required, dependencies, Cultural feasibility In this stage, the projects alternatives are evaluated for their impact on the local and general culture. For example, environmental factors need to be considered and these factors are to be well known. Further an enterprises own culture can clash with the results of the project. Financial feasibility In matter of a new project, financial viability can be judged on the following parameters: â⬠¢ Total estimated cost of the project â⬠¢ Financing of the project in terms of its capital structure, debt equity ratio and promoters share of total cost â⬠¢ Existing investment by the promoter in any other business â⬠¢ Projected cash flow and profitability Conclusion As a conclusion, first question on the assignment can be consider as easy to do and give us a lot of understanding because by finding about the selecting computer hardware and software for the organization an important for management decision and what are the issues will be when selecting computer hardware. The first question and second question provides many acknowledgements to the students because by doing the question, student is learning about the hardware and software of tools to manage the organization in the selecting of hardware and software. When choosing hardware and software is whether it will do the job that we require it to do and who will be using this hardware and software. Theres no point in buying hardware or software that does nothing By doing the assignment, students can realize management information system played an important role in technology world. For those that always support and help us in this assignment, we want to say thank you very much. The Physicists Essay -- Essays Papers
The Physicists The Physicists is a satiric play written by the Swiss author Friedrich Dà ¼rrenmatt about three physicists who are living in the private sanatorium " Les Cerisiers " headed by the last living member of an old regional aristocratic family, Miss Dr. h.c. Dr. med. Mathilde Von Zahnd. The first one thinks he is Sir Isaac Newton, but he is in reality Herbert Georg Beutler, the second one thinks he is Albert Einstein and his real name is Ernst Heinrich Ernesti. The third physicist, Johann Wilhelm Mà ¶bius is different, he has got no second identity but he is in this sanatorium because King Solomon speaks to him. We enter the play when many men are in the saloon. It is the place of a tragedy as Mr Ernesti has strangled a nurse. Mr. Beutler has also killed a nurse a couple of months ago. The inspector is slightly annoyed because he has to visit Les Cerisiers the second time during a short period of time and because he canââ¬â¢t speak to or take away the murderer . He is also expressing the wish of the public prosecutor that the sanatorium has to be taken over by male nurses because of the two murders by the two physicists. During the course of the play the personal and physical change is perceptible. Both the main characters and the environment are changing. For an example in act two, Herbert Georg Beutler alias Sir Isaac Newton turns out to be a long lost world famous physicist Alex Jasper Kilton who discovered the "Theory of Equivalents" also Albert Einstein alias...
